Origin of BIHAR WATER DEVELOPMENT SOCIETY
The origin of Bihar Water Development Society (BWDS) cab be traced way back to 1966-1967, when the state was reeling under drought. The Bihar famine was excellent example of richness of poverty to go hand with Vagaries of Nature. There was a Humanitarian call from then Bihar Chief Minister Mr. Mahamaya Prasad for help. Many International humanitarian Agencies like Oxfam, CRS, US AID, CARE etc responded and came for help. There was one Philanthropist named Fr. R. M DOnahue.S J residing in Kudra in then Shahabad district, who also responded the call and started the relief work at great scale in South Bihar.Furthermore, they realized the plight of the people living in poverty. They dreamed of conception of productive Human chain for social and economic upliftment of the distressed and depressed people at the receiving end of life and development. He along with others formed Catholic Charities with head office in Patna and operational office at Kudra.Later, they felt there should be separate entity of South Bihar districts and planned for establishment of a new organization. The Catholic Charities renamed with same name in Chhotanagpur districts, now in Jharkhand. And it was separated for then South Bihar, with Head office at Patna and was registered with a new name “Bihar Water Development Society” on 14th December, 1967.

ADVENT OF “Bihar Water Development Society” The Govt. of Bihar declared the end of Famine on 14th November, 1967. However, the plight of the people was not yet over. So, visualizing the long term need of non Govt. humanitarian development organization, the Catholic Charities started to work with two new wings for two different regions of Bihar based on different Geographical and population characteristics. Then a new organization was registered with a name “Bihar Water Development Society” on 14th December, 1967 with Head Office at Patna and branch office in Kudra. A 13 member Governing Body was constituted which formulated Policy which is executed by the Executive Officer and the field staff whose office and workshop based at Kudra in Rohtas district. It started working as full-fledged social development organization for then South Bihar districts comprising Shahabad, Patna, Gaya,Munger and Bhagalpur, now serves in 10 districts of Central and South Bihar. In its early phase, BWDS concentrated on developing of both surface and tube wells in the arid of Rohtas District in Bihar.
