BIHAR WATER DEVELOPMENT SOCIETY
The Bihar Water Development Society (BWDS) was established on December 14, 1967, as a response to the severe drought in Bihar during 1966-1967. Initially part of Catholic Charities, the organization was founded to address the ongoing challenges faced by the people of South Bihar. BWDS began by focusing on water development projects, including drilling tube wells and constructing surface wells, to support agriculture and irrigation in the region. Over time, BWDS expanded its mission to empower marginalized communities and promote a just, self-reliant society grounded in the values of peace, love, justice, and equality.

Message From Director
I am pleased to share with you the exciting progress and continued dedication of the Bihar Water Development Society (BWDS) as we work towards building a sustainable and resilient future for Bihar’s communities. Our mission is grounded in creating sustainable, positive change, especially for women and marginalized communities. We believe that empowering women is the key to transforming not just individual lives but entire communities. This vision has driven our work across several critical areas, including women’s empowerment, education, agriculture, livelihoods, and awareness of government schemes.
Over the years, BWDS has witnessed multifaceted success in several key domains, including education, women’s empowerment, supporting farmers, advocating for children’s and women’s rights, providing disaster relief, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Our work is ensuring that the most marginalized sections of society are aware of, and benefit from, government schemes and initiatives. These efforts have positively impacted the lives of marginalized communities, addressing both social issues and the needs for greater human rights and peace within our communities.
